Mobile communications in India entered the 4G era on Tuesday, with Bharti Airtel launching the service in Kolkata.

What's 4G?

• Next Generation in communication. Long Term Evolution technology.

• Download speed of 100 mbps, over 4 times faster than 3G. Allows movie download in Minutes. 

Will it work on 3G phones?

•  No. Bharti has not launched mobile phone-enabled 4G service yet.
• Service available in USB or dongle that can be plugged to computer.
• 4G-enabled mobile devices expected in India by year end. Entry level sets will be around 12,000.

What does it enable?

• Downloading streaming videos or files, video-conferencing, tele-medicine, location based services.

• 4G dongles invoice upfront cost of 7,999 and wi-fi system for 7,750
• Monthly rentals:999 to 1,999
